Cannon Beach Oregon

For quite some time now have I been wanting to photograph Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach at the Oregon coast at sunset. Yesterday I packed up 2 of my 3 kids and made the trip to the coast.
We arrived at noon, had a quiet and calorie rich lunch and then we decided to hang out at the beach.
Jeremy, my 8 year old, ended up playing, wouldn't you have guessed it, in the sand, building bridges, sandcastles, tunnels, mountains and streams :)
The weather was just gorgeous, a few clouds in the sky, perfect for a sunset, mild temperatures, 55 degrees, the wind was a slight breeze.
We found the perfect spot where we could hang out and wait for the big show and boy did Brother Sky ever put on a big show:

It was absolutely astonishing how quickly the light and colors changed with the setting sun, one minute it was golden light, the next minute it was orange, then a deep orange and eventually the dark blue of the night blended in with the colors of the sky

I asked my two kids to stand in front of the camera and then, during the long exposure, to walk around a bit :)

This was the final photo of the night, having been soaked from the knees down for over 2 hours I can honestly say that I was frozen through and through, quite tired and ready to head home. The stars were coming out and it was quite dark already. I did manage to capture this with one blinking star though :)
My wonderful children were patient and didn't complain at all about how much time I spent on these images. I am so very grateful that they are so supportive of my passion :)

Yaquina Head Lighthouse just before sunrise

For this shot I decided to get up "early" to catch the sunrise on Yaquina Head Lighthouse, even though sunrise was at 7:39 ;)
It was cold, about 45 degrees, but no breeze and most importantly no people, I had the whole place to myself and had such a blast!!! I spent an entire hour at the Yaquina Lighthouse. This was one of my first photos and is one of my favorites!

This one was photographed about an hour after the first one, what a difference an hour makes!

Finally we made it back out to the coast. Newport, Oregon is such an idyllic little town. The Elizabeth Inn is the perfect hotel for us. The mattresses are comfortable, the fireplace is cozy and the balcony with it's ocean view is just perfect.

It's been six months since we last went to the coast. This time the pelicans were still there and I had the opportunity to photograph them in 35mph wind gusts.

Walking the beach was incredible, the fresh sea air is rejuvenating. Listening to the waves crash ashore is calming and feeling the wind in my hair was elating.
Jeremy and Lan had a wonderful time checking out starfish and other sea creatures in the tidepools

while I was photographing the pelicans
and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse.
